Earth Hour 2008 - Oops? April 6, 2008

Just the other day I received an SMS asking me to support Earth Hour 2008. The purpose of this event was to make a statement about the greatest (supposedly) contributor to global warming - coal fired electricity.

All I had to do was switch off all lights and non-essential electrical appliances from 8pm till 9pm on the evening of 29 March.

Wow! I guess reducing carbon emissions for one hour on one day of the year will actually help change the fate of the world as we know it.

Pahahaha! If everything in life was that easy!

Even Google was in on the media stunt - they changed their search engine webpage to a black background for the day.

Apparently someone forgot to mention to Google and for that matter, the Earth Hour organisation, that an LCD screen consumes more power when displaying a black background.

I can definitely see the sincerity of both companies in helping to reduce wasteful electrical usage.

Way to go!
